THE EXPLAINER / FINANCIAL EDUCATION

Different funds. The same companies?

The number of funds in a portfolio says less than the investments held inside them.

Look beneath the labels.

Holding several funds does not necessarily create several different sources of exposure. Funds with different names may own many of the same companies or concentrate on the same industry.

An illustrative overlap.

Imagine two hypothetical funds that both hold a large technology company among their biggest positions. Owning both can increase exposure to that business, even though there are two fund names on the statement. This is an example of structure, not a description of a particular product.

Read what the fund owns.

Holdings, sector weights and investment objectives help explain the exposure a fund provides. A narrowly focused fund may offer less diversification than its number of holdings suggests. Diversification can help manage risk, but it cannot guarantee a profit or prevent every loss.
