THE EXPLAINER / FINANCIAL EDUCATION

What an earnings headline leaves out.

Revenue, profit and cash flow answer different questions. Reading them together gives a more useful picture of a business.

Start with the right question.

Revenue describes sales over a period. Profit reflects what remains after relevant expenses. Cash flow shows movements of cash. A strong result in one measure does not settle the questions answered by the others.

Follow the cash.

An income statement and a cash flow statement tell related but different stories. Under accrual accounting, the timing of a sale and the receipt of cash may differ. Investing in equipment also uses cash without appearing as an immediate expense of the same amount.

Read the explanation.

The useful next step is context: the reporting period, changes in the business and the notes accompanying the statements. A headline offers an entry point. The underlying financial statements explain what the number actually measures.
